pnm.ac.id– Madiun State Polytechnic (PNM) Community Service Team (PKM) has once again demonstrated its commitment to responding to environmental challenges. This time it was initiated by the BIMA PKM Team through the Community Partnership Empowerment Program with the theme "Optimizing Plastic Waste Management at the Matahari Sampah Bank Madiun City through Reverse Logistics and Circular Economy Based Technological Innovation".
The program was led by Niza Nurmalasari, S.S., M.M. as team leader with the support of lecturer member Alfi Tranggono Agus Salim, S.Sc., M.T. and Halleina Rejeki Putri Hartono, S.E., M.Acc., Ak., and involving ten students across departments from Engineering, Accounting and Business Administration along with a number of student volunteers.
Through this Community Partnership Empowerment Program, the BIMA PKM Team held an activity entitled "Technical Training on the Use of Plastic Shredding Machines and Resin Printing Equipment at the Matahari Madiun Waste Bank" on August 29 2025. The training was carried out at the Bumi Lestari Main Waste Bank, Madiun City, involving the main partners of the Matahari Waste Bank.
"Through this collaboration, the PNM lecturer and student team is trying to develop a plastic waste management model that is not only environmentally friendly, but also has added economic value." Niza explained.
Circular Economy and Challenges of Plastic Waste Management in Madiun City
Madiun City is currently facing serious problems related to waste management, where the volume entering the Final Disposal Site (TPA) continues to increase while land capacity is increasingly limited. Plastic waste is one of the most dominant and difficult to decompose, so creative solutions are needed so that it doesn't all end up in landfill.
Responding to this challenge, the BIMA PNM PKM Team made waste baskets which were distributed at various points on the Madiun State Polytechnic campus so that the entire academic community could donate plastic waste. The collected waste is then distributed to the Matahari Waste Bank to be processed into various useful products such as ashtrays, drink coasters, paving block, to furniture.
"Plastic waste is reprocessed into useful innovative products. These products are concrete examples of implementing the circular economy concept while providing new business opportunities for local communities." Niza explained.

Participants Participate in Training Enthusiastically
Through technical training entitled "Use of Plastic Shredding Machines and Resin Printing Equipment at the Matahari Madiun Waste Bank" held by the BIMA PKM Team, participants received an explanation as well as direct practice regarding plastic waste processing techniques.
The methods used to process plastic waste vary according to the product produced. For example, ashtrays and drink coasters are made using the methodhand lay-upwithout heating. Furniture is produced using oven heating techniques (extrusion) so that the plastic can be melted and molded into large-sized products. Whereaspaving blockproduced from a mixture of plastic with used oil and sand as basic ingredients.
The participants took part in the training enthusiastically. They not only pay attention to the process, but also directly try to make products from plastic waste.
"Many of the participants admitted that this was the first time they had seen how plastic waste could be turned into useful products, so the training atmosphere felt lively, full of discussion and full of curiosity." Niza said.
This training was also attended by the Head of Winongo Subdistrict, representatives of the Madiun Regency Environmental Service (DLH), as well as the management of the Matahari Waste Bank who provided full support for PNM's efforts to strengthen the circular economy-based waste management ecosystem.
As additional information, the program implemented by the BIMA PKM Team is part of the Community-Based Empowerment–Community Partnership Empowerment Scope, with funding from the Directorate of Research and Community Service, Directorate General of Research and Development, Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology.
Being part of the Community Service Program for Funding Year 2025, the program implemented by the BIMA PKM Team is a manifestation of Madiun State Polytechnic's commitment to providing sustainable solutions, in line with the global issue of reducing plastic waste. The goal is for people not only to see plastic as waste, but also as a resource that can still be utilized through innovation and technology.
"In the future, it is hoped that this program will become a model that can be replicated in other regions, not only as an environmental solution, but also as a source of added economic value as well as a concrete step in reducing the amount of plastic waste that ends up in landfill." Please Niza.
Through this activity, PNM also seeks to strengthen collaboration with local communities while encouraging environmental awareness. It is hoped that the sustainability of the program will have a wider positive impact, both in terms of ecology and socio-economic aspects of society. *(BIMA PKM TEAM/PNM Public Relations Team)
